Common Anxiety Disorder Symptoms

Anxiety Disorders Symptoms

Are They Really Symptoms?

Before discussing an anxiety disorder symptom list, I think it may be valuable to point out what one creator of an anxiety cure program talks about at length. That is, that since anxiety disorder is NOT a disease, the term "anxiety disorder symptom" isn't really applicable or accurate.

He says we should call them "sensations" because that's really all they are. And I think for the most part, he's right, and for two reasons:
First, most are only sensations caused by our minds - they're as misplaced as the anxious reactions to life are themselves. And second, there's a thing called "self-talk" that convinces our subconscious minds of whatever we say to ourselves. The words we use become our reality. If we continue to refer to the sensations and feelings caused by our anxiety problem as symptoms, we continue to convince ourselves that we have a disease.

That all being said, there are some things on this list that could certainly qualify as symptoms; when organs and bodily functions are affected physically, then we're talking about medical issues.

At the other end of the scale, a few of the listed "symptoms" are really just things we do out of our nervousness and tension, such as nervous habits or "ticks".

Perhaps we should just call them all "things that are a result of anxiety disorder".

So here we go:

  • Tightness in the chest
  • Racing heart (or the sensation of it)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Hyperventilation
  • Chest pains
  • Dry mouth
  • Tremors or shaking
  • Sore muscles
  • Muscle weakness
  • Profuse sweating for no reason
  • Tingling in the extremities
  • Dizziness, feeling faint
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Stammering or stuttering
  • Blushing or flushing
  • Frequent yawning
  • Obsessive thoughts
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder
  • Insomnia
  • Nervous ticks
  • Excessive fidgeting
  • Unexplained tiredness
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Grinding teeth
  • Nail biting
  • Fear of driving, flying, any other phobias
  • Agoraphobia
  • Paranoia or sudden fear of nothing

No one experiences or feels all of these and there may be other effects not included here that you do experience. Suffice it to say, if you have anxiety disorder, you WILL be able to relate to this list.

And the bet here is that you've been examining yourself as you read the list to see if you feel any of them. Stop doing that! It only serves to intensify your symptoms/sensations.
